Somos Siembra NC began in 2017 to support immigrant families impacted by ICE detentions, wage theft and other forms of discrimination targeted towards Latines in North Carolina.

We began by organizing a court accompaniment program to train volunteers to travel with immigrants to immigration court hearings, an ICE Watch program to reduce fear and anxiety in immigrant neighborhoods and an Immigrant Solidarity Fund to provide emergency cash assistance to immigrants who lost their sole breadwinner to an ICE arrest.

Being the first to establish those programs in the state, we continue to fill an urgent need in many immigrant neighborhoods to this day.

What We Do

Canvassing and community outreach
Our canvassing and outreach are a first point of contact to learn which issues are affecting Latine families: Somos Siembra NC carries out extensive community outreach efforts including door-to-door canvassing, surveys, and community events to bring visibility to what issues are impacting the Latine community in North Carolina.

Resource and referral work to connect Latine families to needed services:
Somos Siembra NC refers families to appropriate service organizations, legal service providers, and other resources to meet their needs based on the conversations we have with our communities. Our hotline established in 2016 continues to serve as a resource that people can call to get a referral and support. Somos Siembra NC maintains a fund for families that are impacted by harsh immigration enforcement actions and other disasters and partners with organizations like Church World Services to manage the fund.

Network-building and education
Our goal is to connect Latine families to each other and invest in their leadership: Somos Siembra NC holds leadership development, training and educational events that connect Latine leaders to each other and to other racial and social justice organizations.

Educational and cultural tools.
We use our online platforms as a unique space for Latine organizers and leaders in North Carolina by providing online and physical English and Spanish language materials that educate community members on key issues impacting the Latine community in North Carolina.
